He served at the highest levels in NARC/PARC i.e. Director General, NARC, Member (Plant Sciences) and subsequently Chairman, PARC until his retirement in March 2012. Then he worked for FAO-Pakistan as Senior Advisor until September 2012. Dr. Ahmad again served as Chairman, PARC from September 2012 to September 2015. He was working as Program Advisor in the FAO-Pakistan till his last breath. Dr. Ahmad played a key role in the development of disease resistant, high yielding wheat varieties through a tripartite arrangement between the National Breeders, National Coordinated Wheat Programme and Crop Diseases Research Programme of NARC. Similarly as leader of the Soil-Health Programme in the rice-wheat system initiative, Dr. Ahmad played a decisive role in adoption of resource conservation technologies (zero tillage) in the country. As a member of research team working on performance based assessment systems with International Service for National Agricultural Research (ISNAR), Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad introduced Organizational Performance and Assessment System (OPAS) for evaluating the performance of research institutes through a participatory approach at the National level and tested this approach at NARC. Dr Iftikhar had a passion for teaching and research. He led the team designated to establish PARC Institute of Advanced Studies in Agriculture (PIASA) to achieve his dream of integrating teaching, research and extension. He served PIASA as Professor of Plant and Environmental Protection and as its Rector in 2011-12. He supervised more than 42 PhD/MPhil students, and had more than 400 publications including books, research and review papers, technical extension articles and research reports. Dr. Ahmad had strong believe that agribusiness enterprise is essential to meet the upcoming challenges of agro-technological development and its transfer to marketable knowledge-based agriculture. Thus he played a key role in establishing PARC Agro-tech Company (Pvt.) Limited (PATCO). The company is facilitating both the public and private sectors to cooperate, finance and commercialize their novelties. Dr. Ahmad established National IPM Programme with a strong initiative of large-scale implementation of IPM through an innovative farm level research and farmer education approach of Farmer Field School (FFS). Focusing on cotton, the Programme has developed a cadre of Researchers, Extensionists and Farmer Facilitators which proved highly motivated front line force of practicing IPM concepts in good agricultural practices to obtain healthy cotton crop. The Programme has won confidence of farmers, policy makers and all related national and international stakeholders. The Programme has developed innovative approaches like Woman Open School, Children Ecology Club and Community IPM for wider adoption of IPM Practices and growing healthy crops at the grass root level. Experiences from cotton have been expanded to other crops and cropping systems. These experiences have been shared with countries in the South and South East Asia, Central Asia and Africa. He inspired and motivated IPM trained facilitators for establishing SOCIETY OF FACILITATIRS & TRAINRES (SOFT). The society aims to promote, support and advance the living skills for sustainable livelihood. Dr. Ahmad has rightly been called Father of FFS in Pakistan in the last Workshop on FFS Institutionalization held at Bangkok in May, 2016. Dr. Ahmad was member of eleven international and national scientific societies including American Phytopathological Society, British Society for Plant Pathology, Institute of Biology, UK and Cambridge Philosophical Society. In 2014, he was honoured with membership of the Policy Advisory Council of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). Dr. Iftikhar brought many international agriculture development partners (i.e. FAO, CIMMYT, ICARDA, AVRDC, ILRI, IRRI and ICIMOD) at NARC Campus in Islamabad for close collaboration between Pakistan and international community. In recognition of his excellence in agricultural sciences he was conferred upon: Best Research Paper Award-1995 in National Seminar on R & D of Potato Production, NARC. Best Scientist of the Year Award in 1999 by PARC. Pakistan Academy of Sciences Gold Medal – 1999 for contribution in agricultural research. Contribution to Plant Pathology Award-1999, 2nd National Conference of Plant Pathology, UAF. FAO World Food Day Shield-2004 for Nat IPM Program – FAO Regional Cotton IPM in Asia Program. Norman Borlaug award in 2006. PARC Silver Jubilee Award 2006 for his research contributions. From the SOFT forum, Dr. Ahmad was dreaming the uplift of small farmers through institutionalizing of farmers’ education and research.
